She was born in Maryland to free parents. Her mother died when she was three so she was raised by her aunt and uncle. She read her poems at public meetings like her most famous poem Bury Me in a Free Land.
I think that this poem was very detailed about when she talked about the girls being pulled away from their mothers and sold into slavery. She also talks about what would happen if they ran away from the plantation.
